John 2:1-12
What do you like about weddings?
Although I enjoy the wedding ceremony, I absolutely relish the party after the service. I get to mingle with others, see people I haven’t seen in a while, and savor some good food. At my wedding we also had games to make it a real celebration!
A wedding is a great place to start something new. John 2 begins with these words: “On the third day a wedding took place” (2:1). Jesus reveals His glory as the Messiah at an event that is all about new beginnings. A wedding signals a change from being two individuals into one partnership. It signifies something new entirely.
The miracle in this story shows that Jesus is doing something new. He is replacing the ordinary water with the best wine. In the same way, the Messiah has come to replace ordinary living with the best kind of life—life with God. Jesus shows Himself to be the Messiah, reflecting God to us so that we might believe.
The resurrection announces the beginning of a new day for all of humanity. Jesus’ obedience led to His death and resurrection, which was the greatest miracle ever! It was the beginning of the greatest party ever! Death is defeated and Jesus provides a way to God; there is forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace.
Obedience leads to everyday miracles. When we follow Jesus, we reflect God’s character in offering forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace to those around us. We also offer God’s invitation to a party!
Who do you need to forgive? Is there a relationship you can reconcile? How will you bring peace to your world?
