Monday: Second Week of Lent
John 6:22-40
Do you ever find yourself staring blankly into the fridge, looking for something to satisfy a need, yet not really knowing what it may be?
I’ve witnessed this phenomenon often in my household, sometimes mere minutes after the food has been put away, the smell of detergent still in the air.
“Are you really hungry or just bored?”
This type of hunger, I think, is just a habit, a wee ache to be filled for the sake of receiving momentary pleasure.
In the reading, the crowd, still with breadcrumbs lingering on their mustaches and shawls, engages in a hilarious adventure of trying to find Jesus. Having finally figured it out, they questioned Him, looking for answers about His mysterious nautical journey across the lake. I can imagine the disciples with smirks on their faces, knowing the events of the previous few hours. Rather than answer with a basic response like, “Um, I’m God, I can do stuff like that,” He suggests, rather pointedly, that they are just looking to Him for a free lunch for the day when He really is serving “food that endures to eternal life” (6:27). With memories of Moses and manna dancing in their minds, they jump on this idea. “Yes, more manna please! Sign us up! What must we do?”
To this we hear a simple call, which carried across the lake, the Israelite nation, and now across the world—believe in me. I am the Bread of Life. Eat bread that gives life to the world .
When you open the fridge door of your heart what kind of food are you looking for? What does it mean for you to recognize that Jesus is the Bread of Life?
