John 11:45-57
How often do you consider God’s plans when executing your plans?
Lent is intended to help us reflect on the amazing sacrifice that God planned in order to bring about relationship and reconnection with Him. Today we read about the amazing circumstances that compare and contrast human values and plans with God’s values and plans.
Jesus has just raised Lazarus from the dead and many of those who were present, believed in Jesus when they saw the miracle. Some even went to the Pharisees to report what they had witnessed. Were they obligated to go and tell, did they plan to tell, and was it a part of God’s plan? What we notice is that the Pharisees were worried about the miracles Jesus was performing (11:47-49). One of the Pharisees, named Caiaphas, knew the Scriptures and the written prophesies and suggested a different scenario. Did he understand God’s plan and follow it rather than his own or did he really think about it before speaking? Perhaps the answer is found in verse fifty one: “He did not say this on His own.” Isaiah 30:1 warns: “Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the Lord, “Who execute a plan, but not mine, and make an alliance, but not of My Spirit, in order to add sin to sin.”
I wonder how many times we make plans that might mean spiritual life or death for individuals around us or ourselves?
God’s plan is about reconnection and that is why the season of Lent is so important. It causes us to reflect on God’s plan, the great sacrifice, and the special gift of salvation.
Discuss the grand narrative of the Bible, from creation to recreation, in order to reflect on God’s plan for the world.
